Len Ikitau (2), Ben Donaldson, Harry Wilson and Max Jorgensen scored the hosts’ tries while Ryan Lonergan kicked four conversions and three penalties.
What made the home victory all the more dramatic was the Wallabies having Wilson, Lonergan, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii and Hunter Paisami yellow carded by referee Andrea Piardi late in the Test to make it a 15 versus 11 contest.
The Springboks went close to staging a stunning fightback but came up just short as crossings from Johan Grobbelaar, Edwill van der Merwe, Morne van den Berg and a penalty try were not enough as they suffer an agonising loss.
