Wallabies: Joe Schmidt includes injured trio and rookie prop in 40-man squad for training camp

Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt has made an early start to his preparations for the 2026 international season by naming a 40-man squad for a three-day training camp in Sydney in January.
The training camp, which will be held from January 5 to 7, will see the Wallabies come together before returning to their Super Rugby Pacific clubs following a gruelling 2025 Test schedule.
One uncapped player in the squad
Queensland Reds prop Massimo De Lutiis is the only uncapped player, coming off the back of a disrupted 2025 campaign due to injury.
Fellow front-row Isaac Kailea has also been included in the training squad, along with seasoned Australian Test players like Darcy Swain and Brandon Paenga-Amosa, who missed out on selection for the Wallabies’ recent end-of-year tour.
Tom Lynagh and Ben Donaldson are among four fly-halves included in the squad. Lynagh was out of action for the second half of the season due to injury.
Meanwhile, first choice full-back Tom Wright, who is still recovering from a long-term knee injury, has also been called up as well as experienced scrum-half Tate McDermott, who is eyeing a comeback from a hamstring injury.
The training camp will not include overseas-based players like Angus Bell, Taniela Tupou, James O’Connor, Will Skelton and Len Ikitau, who are currently in action at European-based clubs.
“The couple of days we have together in early January will provide a final opportunity to look back on, and to learn from, a demanding 2025 Test campaign,” Schmidt said in a statement.
“It also provides a chance to complete some national testing and check in with the players from a medical perspective before they return to their Super Rugby Pacific clubs ahead of the 2026 season.”
The Wallabies will not assemble again until after next year’s Super Rugby Pacific competition.
Australia are set to play 14 Tests across the 2026 international season. They kick off their Test campaign against Ireland in Sydney on July 4 as part of the new Nations Championship.
This will be followed by encounters against France and Italy, the final two with Schmidt in charge before Les Kiss takes over the coaching reins.
