Wallabies hopeful suspended by Waratahs after training ground bust-up leaves team-mate with fractured eye-socket

Rugby Australia and the Waratahs announced on Saturday that promising lock Miles Amatosero has been suspended following a recent training ground fight with back-rower Angus Scott-Young.
Amatosero received a four-match suspension, which can be reduced to two. It means the Wallabies hopeful will be cleared to play in the Waratahs’ Super Rugby Pacific opener against the Reds at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Friday, February 13.
Earlier this week, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that Amatosero was involved in a skirmish with new recruit Scott-Young, two weeks ago, which left the latter with a fractured eye-socket.
‘Formal review’ held
“Rugby Australia and the NSW Waratahs confirm that Miles Amatosero has been suspended for four games following a formal review into a training ground incident earlier this month,” read a statement from the governing body and the Sydney-based club on Saturday.
“Amatosero can reduce his suspension to two games upon successful completion of counselling and education programs. He will miss the Waratahs’ upcoming trial matches against the Reds and Brumbies.”
The Waratahs’ trial games against Queensland and Brumbies will be held on January 31 and February 5 respectively.
Brumbies dealt hammer blow as experienced Wallabies star to miss start of Super Rugby Pacific season
According to witnesses, Amatosero and Scott-Young clashed at a training session in early January, which resulted in the behemoth lock throwing five punches at his team-mate in two separate moments.
Started his professional career in France
Amatosero moved to France from Australia after high school and spent three seasons there where he represented Top 14 heavyweights Clermont.
He joined the Waratahs ahead of the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific campaign and was a regular in the Sydneysiders’ matchday squads over the past two seasons.
Amatosero was one of the Waratahs’ best players during their narrow 21-10 defeat to the British & Irish Lions last year and his performance in that match put him on the Wallabies radar, although he is yet to earn a call-up to Australia’s national side.
The 23-year-old will be hoping to achieve that goal this year and is looking to secure a starting spot for the Waratahs after the arrivals of new recruits Matt Philip and Angus Blyth.
Meanwhile, experienced back-row Scott-Young is a former Reds player who joined the Waratahs in December after leaving PREM Rugby outfit Northampton Saints after a three-year stint at that club.
