Springboks prop Thomas du Toit has explained his decision to leave Prem holders Bath for United Rugby Championship side the Sharks at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old, who has been a fan favourite at the Recreation Ground during his spell in England, was this week confirmed to be moving on as he rejoins his former club.

According to Rapport, Du Toit was also linked with a move to Top 14 side Bordeaux-Begles but has opted to head home to South Africa and has explained his reasons why.

Misses home

“Our lives, especially after rugby, are in South Africa,” the prop told the publication as he plays his final season at Bath, adding that he and his family are missing home.

“Grandparents, close family and lifelong friends are all there. We miss that.”

There is no doubt that tighthead Du Toit has been a massive success story at the Prem champions and his record of 21 tries in 52 matches is remarkable for a front-rower.

Asked to explain why his stint at Bath has been so fruitful, he explained: “I think it’s a combination of hard work, as well as what the coaches saw in me and what they wanted to develop in me.

“They saw potential in me to advance and improve my game. There was a lot to work on, but they targeted certain areas and focused on my strengths.”

While looking forward to returning home the Springboks prop had an important message for Bath supporters and head of rugby Johann van Graan, who he is so grateful to.

“I just want to say that (the move to the Sharks) is still a long way off. I’m ready to give my all for Bath this season,” he said.

Targets success

“It’s the most important thing in my rugby career for the season ahead, and I want to give it my all for them.

“I owe it to every coach and player, especially Johann, who gave me the chance.

“I’m really excited to do well for my team and see what we can achieve this year.”
