Extent of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s injury revealed as All Blacks series in doubt – report
Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu in action for the Stormers and Springboks.
Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu could miss a part of the Springboks’ Test season after suffering an ankle injury in the Stormers’ United Rugby Championship (URC) victory over Cardiff on Saturday.
The fly-half was seen on crutches following the quarter-final clash with the Welsh region after he was forced off early in the second period.
Stormers boss John Dobson reckoned that it was “pretty serious” and South African outlet News24 have now reported that he may be sidelined for the next three months.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu joins a growing Springboks absentee list with the likes of Lood de Jager, Ethan Hooker, Kwagga Smith, Cobus Reinach and RG Snyman all currently out of action.
That would certainly ruled him out of the conclusion of the URC campaign and the Nations Championship encounters against England, Scotland and Wales in July.
Miss All Blacks series?
Should that timeline be correct, it will also take in part of their Greatest Rivalry series against the All Blacks in August and September, as well as the Test with Argentina.
It is understood that Feinberg-Mngomezulu suffered a syndesmosis injury – high ankle sprain – when he scored the Stormers’ fourth try in the 44-21 triumph over Cardiff on Saturday.
He was immediately replaced by Jurie Matthee at fly-half and was then seen on crutches in the aftermath of the encounter.
The 24-year-old took to Instagram to reveal his absolute determination to come back from his latest setback but, at the same time, suggested that he had picked up a serious issue given the tone of the message.
“Usually, I post caption-less carousels. This time I’ll say it how it is. Frustrated, irritated and questioning why me?” he wrote.
“Sometimes the game reminds you that you’re not invincible!
“Another injury, another chance to come back hungry, determined and focused. I’ve got a job to do, get back and get back better than I left.
“I’m not one to dwell, but I’ll have a little vent! Now, BACK TO WORK! Next job, crystal clear vision and mindset. See you soon!!”
Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s stunning rise
Feinberg-Mngomezulu returned from an injury-hit latter part of 2024 to play a key role for the Springboks as they once again dominated the world game.
He went from a fly-half with huge promise, which earned him a World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year nomination, to a genuine world-class operator in 2025, but his Test ambitions look set to be put on hold for a few months at least.
Rassie Erasmus still has quality 10s to choose from with both Manie Libbok and Handre Pollard getting plenty of game time last year, but the absence of Feinberg-Mngomezulu will be a blow for the Boks.
