Andre Esterhuizen has given his verdict on Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus’ tactic of using him as a hybrid player where the regular inside centre also packs down on the flank for the world champions.

Esterhuizen was first utilised on the side of the scrum during a one-sided 54-7 victory for the Springboks over the Barbarians in an exhibition match earlier this year and although he has not been used in the position again, he described it as an “interesting decision”.

The 31-year-old, who is 1.94 metres tall and weighs 114 kilograms, has the right size to make the transition from the backline to the forwards and although he has no qualms with making the switch, there has been one aspect of it which he is still coming to terms with.

‘The size makes it easier to be able to do that’

“It was obviously an interesting decision. Luckily, the size makes it easier to be able to do that,” Esterhuizen told reporters at a press conference in Durban on Monday.

“For me, it was quite natural. Obviously, there are a few things to learn still and to pick up. But it is tough in front there, especially the training sessions.

“It’s a lot different than the backs’ training sessions. But, for me, I quite like it. I give myself a bit more chance to get into the team.

“For me, wherever I go on, 12 or 6, I’m just happy to play.”

South Africa will be back in action in the Rugby Championship against Argentina in Durban on Saturday and after four rounds of action all four of the competing nations still have a chance of winning the prestigious Southern Hemisphere tournament.

Each team has won two and lost as many Tests with the Wallabies setting the pace atop the table with 11 points, one ahead of the Springboks and All Blacks, and two clear of Los Pumas.

Esterhuizen and Springboks attack coach Tony Brown are preparing for a tough challenge against Argentina this weekend before the sides meet in a rematch at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham in the final round of the competition on October 4.

Springboks wary of Los Pumas

“They’ve beaten the All Blacks already, they’ve beaten Australia,” said Brown.

“So the message to our guys is if we don’t prepare as well as we can, if we don’t pitch up and be as physical and dominant as possible, we’re going to be put under pressure.

“So getting our game right is the massive part for us this week.”

Esterhuizen echoed Brown’s sentiments and is preparing for a tough onslaught from the South Americans.

“They are a very good side, who like to move the ball and use their opportunities, so the big challenge for us will be to try to counter their loose play, and we also need to deliver a quality performance until the final whistle,” he commented.

“As Tony said, they beat all three opposition teams in the competition last year, and they defeated New Zealand and Australia again this year, so they are a dangerous side to face.

“It’s always hard playing against them because they are a tough and passionate nation, but they’ve also come a long way in the last few seasons.

“So, I think it will be a tight game with a big forward battle as well. The team that looks after the ball the best, uses their chances, and does well in the aerial battle will probably come out on top.”
