Nike and South Africa have launched a new Heritage Springboks shirt celebrating 30 years since the famous World Cup victory over New Zealand in 1995.

The retro-styled white heritage shirt is on sale now, priced at £79.99 in the UK and R1,877.22 in South Africa.

The shirt uses South Africa’s alternate white away colours and features a classic yellow fold-over collar and a special anniversary crest to celebrate the ultimate underdog World Cup victory.

South Africa may now be double World Cup winners, but their victory in 1995 was a special one for the Springboks side. The tournament was the first for a newly democratic South Africa after the team missed the previous two tournaments over anti-apartheid boycotts.

The team, featuring Springboks legends such as Francois Pienaar, Chester Williams and Joel Stransky, won all three group games, including a win over Australia. In the final the team defeated the formidable All Blacks in extra time thanks to a Joel Stransky drop goal.

The tournament was later the inspiration for Matt Damon film Invictus, which dramatised the World Cup win on the big screen.

The Heritage kit is designed specifically to mirror the retro shirts of the era and comes with long sleeves. It features a yellow Nike logo on the front and an embroidered South Africa flag on the sleeve.

The Heritage jersey is not the only Nike special edition South Africa shirt launched in recent years. The official Nike website is selling a retro-inspired polo based on the team’s home colours, priced at £39.
