New Fiji head coach Jake White has named his maiden training squad ahead of their Centennial Test against Japan, with three uncapped players in the group.

The ex-Springboks boss, who was appointed as the Pacific Islanders’ new head coach earlier this week, has selected a 28-man squad to head to Japan for next weekend’s meeting, as they look to get a measure of revenge on Eddie Jones’ side following their defeat in last month’s Pacific Nations Cup final. The Test next weekend will also be hosted on the same ground.

This also marks the start of the two sides’ respective preparations for November’s Nations Championship campaigns, with Fiji facing France, Ireland and Italy while Japan take on Wales, England and Scotland.

White’s touring squad consists of 16 forwards and 12 backs, but he is unable to call on some of his European-based players. However, that does mean he can test out his depth chart early, with uncapped trio Apolosi Vuniyawa, Kavekini Boselawa and Nacani Boginisoko all in line for a potential debut this weekend.

Elsewhere, 35-year-old fly-half Ben Volavola could win his first Test cap since 2023, after being named in the extended squad, while Tevita Ikanivere, Terio Tamani, Frank Lomani and Joji Nasova have also been included.

With the Test marking the start of their preparations for the November block and with it coming 12 months out from the start of the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, White believes it is a chance to build towards that bigger goal.

“Our journey begins immediately with the historic Test against Japan, followed by important challenges against France, Ireland and Italy in November,” the newly appointed head coach said. “Every one of those matches will be an opportunity to learn, improve and establish the standards we need heading towards Rugby World Cup 2027.

“I know what winning a Rugby World Cup means to a country. I have seen how it can unite a nation and inspire generations.
