Gloucester confirm second Leinster signing as efficient winger 'relishing' Premiership challenge
Gloucester have confirmed the signing of Rob Russell from United Rugby Championship (URC) side, Leinster.
A strong player, standing at 6ft and weighing 90kg, Russell will bring versatility and finishing flair to Kingsholm, having crossed the try line 18 times in just 35 appearances for the Irish province.
A product of St Michael’s College in Dublin and a former Ireland age-grade international, Russell joined Leinster in 2021 and made his professional debut against the Dragons in the URC.
Words from the coach
Director of rugby, George Skivington, commented: “I’ll echo what I said when we signed Ross Byrne earlier this year, there aren’t many better academies to come through and learn your trade than Leinster.
“Rob has really shown what he can do when given the opportunity. He’s got a pretty decent strike rate for Leinster (almost one try every two games), and he’s motivated for a new challenge in the Gallagher Premiership.
“We’re delighted with our back-three talent already, but to add someone like Rob, who covers across the three positions and has all the attacking assets we’re looking for, is really pleasing.”
The new arrival
Russell added: “I honestly can’t wait to get started at Gloucester Rugby.
“The Gallagher Premiership is one of the toughest leagues in the world, and I’m relishing testing myself against some seriously talented players.
“But most of all, I’m excited to meet the lads there that have been doing some great stuff this season, and I look forward to getting started working with George (Skivington) and James (Lightfoot-Brown) and working in a system that I believe will bring the very best out of me.”
Fan reaction
Gloucester fans have been overwhelmingly positive about their new arrival, with one supporter even poking fun at their local rivals Bath, saying: “Best Russell in the prem now I reckon.”
Others noted his try-scoring exploits, with one fan saying: “Congrats Gloucester – got yourselves a fantastic winger here. The man seems to score a try every match he plays.”
The Cherry and Whites seem keen to welcome their new man to the club, as he joins current Leinster teammate Byrne in the English West Country.
