British and Irish Lions and Wales icon George North will end his career in the famous Black and White jersey of the Barbarians, the historic invitational side have confirmed.

The outside back, who has played at both centre and wing, announced he would be retiring at the end of the current season following a decorated playing career at both club and Test level, but will mark his final professional outing when the Barbarians take on Wales next weekend at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.

During his career, North won 121 Test caps for Wales, helping them win four Six Nations titles and two Grand Slams in the process, and went on two Lions tours in 2013 and 2017.

He also enjoyed stints at Scarlets, Northampton, Ospreys and Provence, and helped the Saints win a PREM title and EPCR Challenge Cup during his time at Franklin’s Gardens.

North is the latest rugby icon to play their final match with the Barbarians, following the likes of Sam Whitelock and George Kruis among others, and admits it was always a dream of his to pull on the famous jersey.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to play for the Barbarians,” he said. “So to be invited now, for a game at Twickenham, against Wales is just incredible.

“I have been so privileged to enjoy the career that I have had, and I have so many unforgettable memories from Wales and friendships to last a lifetime. So to go out against my country, with some of my friends and teammates playing is so special.

“To also be able to play alongside some of the best and most exciting players in the world, and to enjoy that famous Barbarians spirit is something I couldn’t turn down.

“I can’t wait to link up with the boys next week and hopefully we can do something special.”
