WP to face Sharks in Currie Cup Final

Western Province secured a spot in the Currie Cup Final following their 19-5 victory over the Golden Lions in Cape Town on Saturday.

The away side conceded numerous handling errors and penalties which hurt them and a Wilco Louw try – just before half-time – as well as second-half penalties from Robert du Preez proved critical in a low-scoring clash.

Du Preez opened the scoring for the home side, slotting a third minute penalty and two minutes later, JD Schickerling was sin binned for bringing down a rolling maul.

The away side took advantage of being a man up when Jaco van der Walt showed great strength to power over after selling an excellent dummy.

Du Preez then landed his second penalty and regained the lead for the home side. Just before half-time, Schickerling cleared yet another lineout which WP mauled forward. They then went through a number of phases before Louw went in for a critical converted try, handing WP a 13-5 lead at the break. 

The second-half was fairly docile, and it appeared as if the battle of the boot would once again be a factor in a knock-out clash. Du Preez certainly stepped up to the plate, nailing two penalty kicks to give the home side a 14-point buffer with ten minutes remaining.
