Williams to wear ‘clean’ jersey

Sonny Bill Williams is set to be cleared to wear a jersey not bearing the logos of BNZ and Investec when he turns out for the Blues.

Williams taped over the logos on his jersey in his debut match for the Blues against the Highlanders. The Highlanders won 26-20.

Although the 31-year-old did not disclose his reasons, it is widely believed that because he is a devout Muslim, it was done on religious beliefs.

However, it seems the issue is close to being resolved. According to Stuff, Williams will be given a 'clean' match jersey for the Blues' next match against the Hurricanes as well as a training kit.

The only reason for the delay is that Investec, based in South Africa, has not yet given clearance because of the time difference.

The whole saga has gained worldwide attention, with New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English even weighing in on the controversy.

"It is hard to understand that one guy has to behave differently than the rest," English told the AM Show on Monday.

"I don't understand all these professional contracts, but if you're in the team, you're in the team."
