Worcester scrum-half Ryan Powell picked up a knee ligament injury in Friday's win over Sale and could be sidelined for two months.
Powell has been the incumbent of the number nine shirt for most of the season at Sixways, and his loss will be a bigh blow to the Guinness Premiership strugglers, for whom Friday's win was so crucial.
“It is a big shame for him as he has been very competitive in that scrum-half position,” Director of Rugby Mike Ruddock told BBC Hereford and Worcester.
“He'll be gutted to be out, after becoming first choice, but we do have cover at scrum-half.”
Powell's replacement at Edgeley Park on Friday, namesake Matt, will almost certainly take over against Newcastle at Sixways this coming Friday, and there are a couple of promising youngsters waiting in the wings in England U20 international Johnny Arr and Ben Jones.
