VIDEO: RFU chief executive explains Championship cuts

Date published: February 14 2020

Bill Sweeney has explained why Championship clubs have been issued with drastic cuts from next season.

The RFU will pay only £288,000 per Championship club, down from £530,000, under the new terms for 2020/21 with Premiership Rugby also reducing its financial contribution to the league by half to £850,000 for 2021/22.

Chief executive Sweeney has explained to Sky Sports reporter Jamie Weir that this week’s shock announcement was based on a poor return of investment, “objectives and deliverables” not being met and their belief that the Championship is not the “primary place where Premiership and England players are discovered and developed”.

He was also asked about the possibility of the Premiership being ring-fenced in an extensive interview below.
