United Rugby Championship: Veteran Richie Gray pens new deal with Glasgow Warriors

Scotland veteran Richie Gray has penned a contract extension with Glasgow Warriors ahead of the next United Rugby Championship season.

Gray made his debut for Glasgow against Ulster in 2009 during his first of two stints at the club that has seen him represent the side on 77 occasions.

The British and Irish Lion has a rich history in Glasgow colours, being named in the PRO12 Dream Team in 2010/11 and scoring the match-winning try against Bath in the Heineken Cup.

After time in England and France playing for various clubs, Gray was re-signed by Glasgow as head coach Danny Wilson’s first signing in 2020.

The 32-year-old has represented Scotland on 67 occasions and in 2013 earned his only cap for the British and Irish Lions in Australia.

“I’m chuffed to be able to re-sign,” Gray told Glasgow Warriors’ official website.

“This club means a lot to me – it’s where I started my professional rugby journey and it’s an environment that makes it a real pleasure to come into training every day and go to work.

“I’ve really enjoyed my rugby since returning to Glasgow, and to be able to continue to pull on the Glasgow jersey is a real privilege.

“We’ve got a talented group of players at Scotstoun and I truly believe this squad is capable of some great things in the near future.”

Wilson commended Gray’s impact on the club, particularly at lineout time.

“Richie’s form has been excellent ever since he returned to Glasgow,” said the coach.

“Not only has his lineout work been top-class, but he’s contributed hugely around the field with a very high work rate with and without the ball.

“He brings a wealth of experience to our squad and provides a great role model for our young group of forwards in the playing group. He’s a great professional and we look forward to continuing to work closely together.”
