Wales fly-half Gareth Anscombe has confirmed that he’s extended his contract with the Ospreys for an additional year.
The versatile New Zealand-born playmaker has only made 14 appearances for the Welsh region, having battled with a long-term injury.
But Anscombe has been named in coach Wayne Pivac’s Wales squad that will take on South Africa in a three-match Test series in July.
Back in the national set-up
The 31-year-old is delighted to be back on the field and felt he had hit his straps near the end of the United Rugby Championship season.
“Getting back playing was my primary focus and with the help of my family, friends and the medical team and the strength and conditioning staff at the Ospreys, that was achieved,” Anscombe told the Ospreys‘ website.
“Towards the end of the recent URC campaign I really felt I was making the contribution I wanted to on the field. It’s been a tough road but to get back doing what I love was always the target.
“Delivering Heineken Champions Cup rugby for a second season for the Ospreys shows the potential we have in the squad. We are all excited about what we can achieve next season.”
Ospreys head coach Toby Booth commended Anscombe on the mental fortitude shown to come back from a long-term injury and believes the more he plays, the more significant impact he will make.
“Gareth has shown real resilience, discipline and professionalism to getting back to doing what he does best is,” Booth said.
“The more he has played, the more you have seen him show the influence he can have on the team and the game.”
