United Rugby Championship: Connacht bolster front-row stocks

Connacht have announced that they have signed Scotland hooker Grant Stewart, who has inked a short term six-month deal with the Irish outfit.

The 27-year-old previously played for Glasgow Warriors before parting ways with the Scottish club at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Stewart joins the Galway-based club as injury cover and to provide depth at hooker.

He made 48 appearances for the Warriors during a five-year period and scored nine tries during his stint at the club.

Test experience

After representing Scotland at under-age level, Stewart made his senior Test debut for his country against France in a Rugby World Cup warm-up match in 2019.

Connacht head coach Andy Friend is delighted that Stewart decided to join the United Rugby Championship outfit.

“We have three quality hookers in the squad in Dave Heffernan, Shane Delahunt and Dylan Tierney-Martin,” he told Connacht’s official website. “However with Dave now a regular Ireland squad member and Shane unfortunately absent through injury for a little while longer, we’re now a little light in the position.

“So I’m very pleased we have been able to sign a player of Grant’s calibre and we have begun to integrate him into the squad this week, well in time for the start of the new season.”
