Tui unfazed by Test match physicality

Versatile forward Lukhan Tui says he expected the step up from Super Rugby to Test rugby to be bigger after making his Wallabies debut.  

Tui made his debut off the bench, coming on as a replacement for Adam Coleman, in the Wallabies' 27-27 draw with the Springboks in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

The Reds lock, who can also play at flank, has a massive physical presence and found the transition to the international arena to be smoother than he would have thought especially in terms of the level of physicality.

“I found it the same [as Super Rugby], I pride myself on the physical aspects of the sport so there was a bit of difference but nothing that I was shocked by,” Tui told Fox Sports.

The 21-year-old's versatility has given him the inside lane in becoming a regular inclusion on Wallabies coach Michael Cheika's bench as he can cover two positions, lock and blindside flank.

“Being able to play two positions is something that is always handy to have, particularly if you’re playing a role off the bench,” Tui said.

“I haven’t read too much into it but he’s chatted to me about potentially playing No.6. It’s a challenge that I’m more than happy to take on.

“I enjoy watching the sixes play all over the world and in a way it’s similar to the way I like to play. If he wants me to play there I’m more than happy to play there.

“When I started playing rugby there years ago, my first game was at No.8. I was there so I could carry the ball but as time went on I grew too tall.

"Six is something that I enjoy watching around the world play and it’s something that I’d love to play but I’ll wherever he (Cheika) wants me to play. Whether it be six, outside-centre or fullback for the Wallabies I’d be more than happy to play wherever he wants me to play.”
