Super Rugby: Team of Round 18
So that's it for regular season action as we now turn our attention to the play-offs, but not before going through the top performers in Round 18.
So that's it for regular season action as we now turn our attention to the play-offs, but not before going through the top performers in Round 18.
Not surprisingly, the Sharks (five) dominate our selections this week after taming the defending champion Bulls at fortress Loftus on Saturday.
There were also wins for the Stormers (one), Blues (one), Waratahs (one), Force (one) and the Reds (two) – but lets not forget some brave efforts coming from the losing camps too with the Bulls (one), Hurricanes (one) and Rebels (one) getting a mention too.
15 Kurtley Beale (Waratahs): This guy just breeds confidence from the back. Beale gives the Waratahs security as well as deadly counter-attacking skills, while his defensive and positional play make him one of the most effective full-backs in the competition.
14 David Smith (Force): The Force's loss is Toulon's gain as the Samoan-born speedster ended off his 2011 Super Rugby season with a vital try.
13 Stefan Terblanche (Sharks): The evergreen Sharks fullback enjoyed one of his finest games in the number 13 jersey, with his stewardship and experience providing massive stability in the backline.
12 Juan de Jongh (Stormers): The Stormers no-nonsence centre broke the Cheetahs line throughout using his speed and strength, while his defence was also of a high quality.
11 Ryno Benjamin (Cheetahs): He may have been on the losing team, but celebrated a hat-trick of tries against his former team-mates.
10 Frederic Michalak (Sharks): A brilliant individual showing by the French international brought a packed Loftus Versfeld to their knees.
9 Charl McLeod (Sharks): Formed a potent halfback partnership with Michalak. His speedy and efficient ball distribution, mixed with an intelligent boot and sniping runs, kept the Bulls guessing and provided his own backline with plenty of momentum on attack.
8 Pierre Spies (Bulls): He hasn't had a memorable season form-wise, but the Bok number eight constantly put his body on the line and added power to the Bulls attack whenever he had ball in hand.
7 Liam Gill (Reds): The future is bright for this up and coming loose forward who got through a mountain of work in Hamilton for the Reds – scoring a precious try in the process.
6 Keegan Daniel (Sharks): Was involved in a titanic battle at the breakdown that played a huge role in the final result for the Sharks, while is clever pass to JP Pietersen put the winger into a gap that led to Terblanche's try.
5 Ali Williams (Blues): The business end of the season is when you expect your big game players to step up and deliver, and Williams is doing exactly that. The 30-year-old is making all the right moves at just the right time of the year to put himself in serious contention to regain his All Black jersey.
4 Gerhard Mostert (Sharks): His aerial accuracy and hard driving around the field made him a stand-out figure in South Africa's capital – not an easy feat when your up against the likes of Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha and Danie Roussouw.
3 Greg Somerville (Rebels): Played his last game for the Rebels before hanging up his boots, the former All Blacks prop answered the doubters who thought his best days were behind him with a solid 2011 season.
2 Andrew Hore (Hurricanes): Another front-rower that played his final game, but only in a Hurricanes jersey, and certainly saved his best for last.
1 Ben Daley (Reds): Dropped anchor in the scrums and presented numerous problems to the opposition in the tight as well as the loose.
