Sunwolves say goodbye to Super Rugby

The Sunwolves have confirmed their final season as a Super Rugby team is over after they were not included in Australia’s domestic tournament.

Sunwolves CEO Yuji Watase released a statement revealing that logistic and travel issues meant they would not be featuring in the competition.

It had been a possibility that they would join the four Australian Super Rugby outfits and Western Force, but that idea has now fallen through.

“It’s extremely unfortunate and disappointing but the reality is that the Sunwolves’ time in Super Rugby has come to an end for now,” Watase said.

“It has been an honour and privilege for us to be part of the toughest rugby competition in the world.”

2020 was set to be the Sunwolves’ final term in Super Rugby as struggles with travel and greater interest in their domestic league hindered them.

“With the implications of COVID-19 and the significant changes to the 2020 SANZAAR Super Rugby season the Sunwolves will no longer take part in any amended format of the competition,” read a statement from the team.

Australia’s Super Rugby competition is expected to commence on July 3 while New Zealand has already confirmed its own tournament starts on June 13.
