Sunday Social: Beauden’s Blues move, East 17 and cricket

It is time for Planet Rugby’s Sunday Social, your quirky recap of the serious and not so serious talking points from the past week’s action.

We begin with the big news of the week that saw Beauden Barrett swap the Hurricanes for the Blues ahead of 2020. For so long a ‘Canes favourite, this picture took a while to get used to. Can he transform the team?

The move will of course break up the long-standing half-back partnership with TJ Perenara, who has taken the news on the chin. It will surely have been an emotional moment when the news broke, however.

Soon after news of Barrett’s move, in Australia Bernard Foley confirmed he was leaving the country for a switch to Japan.

Meanwhile in the northern hemisphere, pre-season is underway and Sale Sharks have brought in forfeits for their players which ultimately produced this. As we said in our tweet, is it possible to unsee something?

Sunday sees England and New Zealand face off for World Cup glory on the cricket field. It’s no surprise their rugby equivalents have sent out social messages ahead of the hugely anticipated clash at Lord’s.

Elsewhere there was a notable birthday this past week as former Cardiff, Wales, British & Irish Lions and Baa-baas scrum-half Gareth Edwards turned 72 on Friday. Here’s that incredible score. All the best, Gareth.

Finally there was one big game over the weekend that saw World Cup dark horses Fiji defeat the Maori All Blacks. At times they played rugby only Fiji can with this first clip showing their offloading capabilities.

Check out this try from their own 22 as well. Australia and Wales must be at the top of their game in Japan later this year if they are to avoid going down to the islanders, who could well make the knockout stages.
