Sunday Social: 50 up, rivalries and a new career

It is time for Planet Rugby’s Sunday Social, your quirky recap of the serious and not so serious talking points from the past week’s action.

We kick off at Twickenham where England ended France’s Six Nations Grand Slam hopes in what was a thrilling, drama-filled encounter with the result in the balance until the game’s dying moments. Upon hearing the referee’s final whistle, England captain Owen Farrell and his team-mates showed just how much that victory meant to them.

The England v France game certainly was an entertaining spectacle.

England head coach Eddie Jones couldn’t hide his delight after the game although he caused some confusion with this comment about a ‘captain’s challenge’ in his post-match interview.

That match was a memorable one for Bath flyer Anthony Watson, who made his 50th Test appearance for England. He celebrated it with a well taken try and the official player-of-the-match award. Well done, Anthony!

Meanwhile, Round Four’s early game between Italy and Wales was a one-sided affair with the Azzurri struggling to keep up with the opposition.

Italy’s captain Luca Bigi didn’t help his team’s cause when he was sent to the sin bin just seven minutes into the game. Setting a bad example.

We do hope that Harry and Meghan were able to enjoy the Six Nations show on Saturday.

Elsewhere, in New Zealand, Crusaders wing Leicester Fainga’anuku caught the eye with this spectacular try in his side’s win over the Chiefs. Excellent finish!

While former referee Nigel Owens was reminiscing about the game’s best rivalries. There are some great ones on his list.

Earlier in the week, dual code superstar Sonny Bill Williams announced his retirement and World Rugby paid tribute to him with this great video. Thanks for the wonderful memories, Sonny!

The World Rugby guys also took us back to the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England when Williams hit the headlines with this classy gesture.

The 58-cap Test centre didn’t take long to announce his next career choice and fellow All Black Andrew Mehrtens broke the news in humorous fashion.
