Ireland vs Italy, 6-0

Two penalties in the first half gave Ireland, the defending champions but with nohne of last years champions in the team, a hard-fought victory in difficult conditrions at Dubarry Park in Athlone.

Despite losing scrumhalf Luca Martinelli to the sin-bijn in the first half and then having the embarrassment of a red card for lock Alberto Cazzola, the Italian line remained intact. The yellow card was for an offence at the tackle, the red card for punching. It was on a touch judge's report. Presumably there are different standards for Under-20 players from those applying to seniors.

Martinelli's infringement just before half-time brought the score to 6-
