Sexton takes wet-weather win

Leinster fly-half Jonathan Sexton was thrilled to weather not only the tough conditions but also Wasps’ threat in Dublin on Saturday.

The Irish province won 32-17 at the Aviva Stadium as they went over four times to set up a semi-final against either Clermont or Toulon.

Afterwards Sexton explained that the rain didn’t help their game but to secure a victory against Wasps has to be taken with both hands.

“We’re disappointed with some of the errors we made – it was not a perfect game,” he told EPC Rugby after a 12-point personal haul.

“The conditions were pretty horrific and that made for a lot of errors, the ball was like a bar of soap and the swirling wind didn’t help.

“They capitalised on a couple of our mistakes and are a very dangerous team – they are where they are for good reasons.”

Leinster head coach Leo Cullen added that there is plenty of work to be done before their semi-final: “We started really, really well but some of our play was a bit frustrating midway through the first-half when we were a bit disjointed.

“There were a couple of things we did not manage particularly well but I was really pleased to get that try just before half-time and all the talk at half-time was about being smart and making the connections.

“I thought we then managed our field position really well when we had a lot of possession but there are definitely things we can do better.”
