Season over for recent Wales call-up Willis Halaholo

Cardiff Blues have confirmed that recent Wales call-up Willis Halaholo suffered an acute anterior cruciate ligament injury over the weekend.

The injury took place during Saturday’s Challenge Cup pool clash with Leicester Tigers, a game the English side won 14-11 at the Arms Park.

The powerful centre is set to undergo surgery next week and will then begin his rehabilitation process with his side’s first-class medical team.

In a further blow, the knee injury prevents Halaholo from linking up with the Wales squad on Monday. He has been replaced by Scott Williams.

Wales head coach Wayne Pivac last week named a 35-man squad to prepare for his first match in charge against the Barbarians on November 30, which included five uncapped players. The first game of Pivac’s coaching tenure at the Principality Stadium is not a capped international.

On announcing his first Wales squad, Pivac said: “It is great to get the squad announced and get the ball rolling on our first meet-up and first fixture next week.

“This Barbarians game is a great chance for us as a new squad and management to get together and to set the scene for what we are looking to do. Having this opportunity ahead of tournament rugby in the Six Nations is ideal for us.

“It is also a great chance for some players to really put their hand up and show what they are about and take to the field in front of a big crowd at home.”
