‘Score does not reflect the game’ – Young

Wasps boss Dai Young feels the scoreline didn’t truly reflect the game after his side beat Worcester Warriors 24-10 at Sixways on Sunday. 

Young admitted he believed the hosts deserved a losing bonus point, which evaded them at the death.

"I think that we were flattered a little bit by that result," he told Wasps' official website.

"I always thought we had another gear and that we probably just did enough to win the game, but I think it was cruel for Worcester to not get a bonus-point because I think they deserved one.

"I don’t think there was two scores between the teams. We knew that Worcester would bounce back from last week, that was a given. We knew they would come here with lots of physicality, endeavour and energy and put us under lots of pressure. 

"We have to look at ourselves as well. Our accuracy eluded at times which meant we were under pressure and handed the momentum back to Worcester. It wasn’t a great performance from us but I’m pleased we came here and got a win because these are the kinds of games you can lose.

"We’re never going to be perfect every week but I don’t think any team has hit their stride yet and playing the way they like to play. We’re certainly not."

Quizzed by members of the press on Marcus Watson, who scored his first try for the club in sensational fashion, Young was glowing in his praise, and highlighted that he now had three dangerous wingers at his disposal.

"I wouldn’t have signed Marcus Watson if I didn’t think he was any good! He’s quality, defensively he does really well for us as well," he added.

"Josh Bassett had an outstanding season last season and doesn’t get the plaudits he deserves and we’ve got Wadey as well who was ruled out today with his hamstring. 

"We’ve got three quality out-and-out wingers with a lot of players who can play on the wing as well, in Willie Le Roux, Rob Miller and so on. But I’m really pleased we can rotate the squad. 

"We want to create space out wide, and if you create space you have to have the ability to finish off. The wing is always going to be an important position for us. I’m really pleased with how we played today and the quality we have with the three of them."

Young was also asked on the injuries sustained in the game, as he said that Kearnan Myall’s looked to be the most serious on first impressions. 

“Kearnan looked the worst of all our injuries today with his ankle," he explained.

"It’s too early to tell but he’s iced up at the minute and he has a little bit of pain there, so fingers crossed. 

"Second row is an area of strength for us but, as I said last week, we’ve got so many injuries there that it can quite easily become a bit threadbare and our squad can really be tested."
