Sale Sharks have moved quickly to complete the transfer of England star Mathew Tait from Newcastle on a three-year contract.

The 22-year-old utility back parted with the Falcons along with Toby Flood and Ben Woods with one year remaining on their deals.

Therefore, the Sharks are believed to have paid a fee for Tait, who is likely to replace Northampton-bound Ben Foden at Edgeley Park next season.

“I am delighted to be able to announce that Mathew Tait will join Sale Sharks at the start of next season,” said Sale Chief Executive James Jennings.

“Mathew is an exceptional talent and an established England international. I am sure that he will complement and strengthen our attacking options next season.”

Sale coach Philippe Saint Andre was also delighted with the news as Sale prepare to face Harlequins in the Guinness Premiership on Sunday.

“This is fantastic news for the club. Mathew is a naturally gifted rugby player who can play at full back, wing and outside centre,” he said.

“Although he is only 22 years old, he has already won 23 caps for England and has still tremendous potential to develop further as a player.”

Meanwhile, Tait explained his excitement about the challenge that lies ahead as Newcastle's dismal season seems to have reached a new low.

“I am really looking forward to joining Sale Sharks,” he said.

“I know some of the Sale Sharks players from the England squad and am looking forward to meeting the rest of the squad in pre-season training.

“I have really enjoyed my time at Newcastle Falcons, but I am now looking forward to a new challenge at Sale Sharks and playing with a different group of players.”
