South Africa players celebrate with the series trophy

Another busy day in the rugby union game as it was announced that the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa will go ahead as planned in 2021.

The Lions’ schedule for next year’s series in South Africa has been confirmed with the tourists set to play eight games, including three Tests, in July and August 2021. There had been concerns over the viability of the tour due to coronavirus, but it will go ahead as planned.

Continuing with the Lions theme and our ‘My rugby hero’ feature continues with legendary scrum-half Gareth Edwards. He was a crucial part of their victories over the All Blacks and Springboks in 1971 and 1974 respectively, but his biggest moment was arguably the try he scored against the Barbarians in ’73.

Elsewhere, Leicester fly-half George Ford believes that England will benefit from Manu Tuilagi remaining in the Premiership. After the centre rejected an amended contract at the Tigers, there were thoughts that he could sign a deal in France or Japan but, by agreeing to join Sale Sharks, the 29-year-old remains eligible for the national team.

What’s in the news

Premiership Rugby have announced that a further nine people – seven players and two staff – have tested positive for Covid-19. It is down from the 10 cases confirmed last week as they prepare to restart their season on August 14.

Meanwhile, Elliot Daly has committed his future to Saracens by signing a new long-term deal with the club, which will take him to at least 2023.

Finally, Leicester Tigers have confirmed that former Crusaders flanker Jordan Taufua will remain in the Midlands after accepting an amended contract.
