Rob Baxter not looking to make any more signings

Exeter director of rugby Rob Baxter has ruled out any further signings ahead of the 2018/2019 season and has full confidence in the depth of his squad.

Wales and British and Irish Lions international Alex Cuthbert is the Chiefs’ only signing, having agreed a three-year deal, leaving Cardiff Blues after seven years at the Arms Park.

Meanwhile, Will Chudley, Ed Holmes, Kai Horstmann, Shaun Malton, Julian Salvi and Thomas Waldrom have all gone the opposite way out the exit door – either retired or having moved clubs.

The Chiefs have always prided themselves on having one of the best youth academies in the Premiership, boasting the youngest side on average in the Premiership, and Baxter says he is satisfied with the options at his disposal – barring any major injury crisis.

“What we’ve got here now, including the academy guys, will be what we start the season with. I would not be surprised if it is the group we finish the season with too, unless we have major injury issues,” Baxter told Devon Live.

“We are very comfortable with what we have got over the next 12 months and these guys will see us through the season.

“We had an average age which was very good last season – it was the youngest in the Premiership.

“So it wasn’t about going out and recruiting more players, it was about keeping this group together and letting them mature together.”
