Former Springbok number eight Pierre Spies has announced his retirement from professional rugby.

Last month, Spies was one of six players who were released from Montpellier after former Scotland coach Vern Cotter replaced Jake White as the Top 14 club's head coach.

Spies moved to Montpellier in 2016 from Top League club Kintetsu Liners who he joined from the Bulls in 2015.

He spent 10 seasons at the Pretoria-based outfit where he represented them at Super Rugby level on 119 occasions and also played 17 times for the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup.

According to Netwerk24, Spies has not revealed his future plans.
