Reds prop Greg Holmes may miss the rest of the Super 14 season due to a knee operation.

The prop forward has had minor surgery to remove a loose bone fragment from his knee and is expected to be out for at least three weeks. Head Coach Phil Mooney fears he may have lost Holmes for the rest of the campaign.

“It's bad luck for Holmesy, who'd been playing extremely well for us,” said Mooney.

“He felt some pain in the knee after our last match in South Africa and when we had the scans done they found quite a large bone fragment that had to be removed.”

The Reds have already lost full-back Chris Latham (knee) for the rest of the season, whilst Hugh McMeniman is still struggling to prove his fitness, as is captain Sam Cordingley.

“Whoever we name in the side will be up for it,” Mooney added.

“This is a big match for us, our first back at home after a month in South Africa and a chance for guys to press their representative claims.”

Mooney expects to name his side on Tuesday.
