Premiership: Wallabies scrum-half Joe Powell to leave Melbourne Rebels for London Irish

London Irish have announced the signing of Wallabies scrum-half Joe Powell, who will arrive from Super Rugby Pacific outfit the Rebels.
The 28-year-old links up with the Exiles after two seasons in Melbourne. Before that he was a Brumbies favourite and has been a consistent performer.
As vice-captain at the Brumbies, Powell led the team to Super Rugby AU glory in 2020 and was included in the Team of the Season for that competition.
He made his bow for Australia in 2017 and London Irish director of rugby Declan Kidney is happy to have secured the scrum-half’s services next season.
“It’s a pleasure to have Joe as part of our plans here at London Irish and he brings with him a lot of playing time in Super Rugby under his belt,” he said.
Exciting adventure
“He is a multi-skilled player that will complement the existing options that we have here at Hazelwood.”
Powell admitted that he’s looking forward to getting started at the Premiership club, with his attractive style of play set to excite the London Irish fans.
“Moving to London Irish is an exciting adventure, having only played in my native Australia it will be a challenge to test myself in a very competitive squad and testing division,” he said.
“I have been keeping an eye on Irish and the Premiership from afar, and I’m excited to now be a part of that and to expand my talents domestically and in Europe next season.”
