Newcastle Falcons have received a shot in the arm with the news that experienced full-back Tom Penny has signed a two-year contract extension with the Tyneside-based club.

Penny has come through the ranks at the Falcons‘ academy and has already played in 72 matches for the club at senior level.

Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards is happy that Penny has extended his stay at the Premiership club.

“Tom is a big talent who has played really well for us over a number of years now, and it’s great news that we have kept him on board,” said Richards.

“He’s a homegrown lad who has come through our system, he offers us a number of options in the back-line and he has adapted really well to playing at full-back on a much more consistent basis.

“As well as his playing ability he’s a great character around the place and a positive influence on the squad, and I look forward to seeing his continued contribution towards the growth of the club.”

Happy at Newcastle

Meanwhile, Penny, who has made 18 appearances for Newcastle during the the 2021/22 campaign, said: “It was a very easy decision for me.

“I’m really happy to re-sign here, it’s my boyhood club and this will be something like my tenth season with the Falcons.

“I love the club, I love the boys and it was a very simple call when I was given the opportunity to sign for another two seasons. I used to come and watch the games at Kingston Park when I was a kid, and to be pulling on the Falcons’ shirt now as a player is really special.

“I had a short spell at Harlequins which gave me a slightly different perspective on things, and it’s always interesting to see other set-ups and ways of operating. I love what we have here at Newcastle, and I’m excited about remaining part of things.”
