Positive news on Lions trio

British and Irish Lions trio Jack McGrath, Sean O'Brien and Jonathan Sexton have been given injury boosts in an update from Warren Gatland.

The prop (arm), flanker (calf) and fly-half (HIA) were concerns after Leinster's PRO12 semi-final loss to the Scarlets in Dublin on Friday.

But in an update from British and Irish Lions head coach Gatland, the signs appear positive with the tour to New Zealand fast approaching.

"He had an X-ray (on his arm injury) and it's clear, just some bruising," Gatland revealed when talking about prop McGrath at Carton House.

"I think Sean O'Brien is probably more concerned than we are, in terms of he is frustrated because he felt he probably overloaded himself last week with the amount of training he did in preparing for the game (against the Scarlets), considering he hadn't had a lot of rugby.

"He probably needed to take a little more time easing into it. We are making sure we take time in easing him into it properly. Having chatted to him, he feels confident he's going to be 100 percent. The scan (on his calf injury) came back pretty good, so we are happy."

On Sexton, who underwent a head injury assessment following Leinster's semi-final loss, Gatland said: "Johnny had no symptoms on the HIA, there was no concussion from that, so we are expecting him to take a good part in training tomorrow and then later in the week."

Meanwhile, Leinster head coach Leo Cullen also issued an injury update following their defeat which saw several of their players injured.

"Garry Ringrose took a knock to his knee late in the game but is not of concern at this stage and he will be assessed further by the Ireland medical team next week," read a statement.

"Scrum-half Luke McGrath was removed for a head injury assessment in the first half and did not return to play following the assessment. He has entered the return-to-play protocols this week and will be assessed further by the Ireland medical team next week.

"Finally, Rhys Ruddock was also removed for a head injury assessment in the second half, and like McGrath, did not return to play. Ruddock has entered the return-to-play protocols this week and will be assessed further by the Ireland medical team next week."
