Player ratings: Scotland lay down a marker

Following their 11-6 triumph over England in their Six Nations Test at Twickenham on Saturday, here’s the player ratings for Scotland.

15 Stuart Hogg (c): Fully deserves his place in the history books for the rare Scotland win at Twickenham for holding his nerve, despite the odd wobble. Led from the front and impressed with his leadership, especially during the latter stages. 7

14 Sean Maitland: Potent presence out wide whenever called upon and gained ground for his team with some strong attacking runs. 7

13 Chris Harris: Solid in defence and smart in attack. Although he hardly set the world alight, he was steady throughout and should be happy with his effort. 8

12 Cameron Redpath: Excellent Test debut and definitely won the battle against former England U20s team-mate Ollie Lawrence. Redpath caught the eye with some strong carries and grew in confidence as the match progressed. 8

11 Duhan van der Merwe: Fantastic, bullocking finish for his try but also made his mark in other areas. Was particularly impressive as a ball carrier and kept England’s defence busy with powerful runs. 8

10 Finn Russell: A mixed bag of sublime creativity and the ridiculous trip on Ben Youngs. Kept England’s defenders on their toes and combined well with Redpath on his outside. 7

9 Ali Price: Made a nervy start when two of his clearance kicks were charged down by Maro Itoje but soon found his feet and improved during the rest of the match. Steadying hand on the tiller and a constant threat. 8

8 Matt Fagerson: Put himself about throughout as Scotland merited their fine win. Did well with ball in hand where he made numerous carries which tested England’s defence. 8

7 Hamish Watson: A major force in this historic Scotland win. Was a threat at the breakdown and also did his bit on defence. 9

6 Jamie Ritchie: Strong all-round performance. Ensured continuity on the ball for the Scots with impressive, often unsung tight work. 8

5 Jonny Gray: Towering performance in forcing the likes of Itoje into rare mistakes. Also made his mark on defence where he put in a big shift. 9

4 Scott Cummings: Crucial and gritty shift in the engine room. Did what was expected of him in the lineouts but also put in some big hits. 7

3 Zander Fagerson: Did well in the loose with some strong carries and also locked out Scotland’s dominant scrum in style. 8

2 George Turner: He had big boots to fill with Stuart McInally and Fraser Brown both injured but made his mark with a fine performance. Had a vital hand in Scotland’s try and impressed in the set-piece. 8

1 Rory Sutherland: Was on the field for 65 minutes before being replaced by Oli Kebble but the Edinburgh man gave a good account of himself, especially the scrums where he got the better of Will Stuart. Dominated in the tight and was steady in the loose. 7

Replacements: Astute unloading of the bench from boss Gregor Townsend. All the players who came on did well and made good contributions in the team’s victory. 8
