O’Connor – ‘May easily the best’

Leicester Tigers head coach Matt O’Connor has hailed Jonny May as 'easily the best finisher and best left winger in England' in the wake of Saturday's victory over London Irish.

May scored his sixth try in as many games for his new club Leicester Tigers as they earned a 28-27 win over London Irish at the Madejski Stadium.

The England winger could not have asked for a better start to his Tigers’ career as he found the tryline once again, though credit should also go to Matt Toomua’s long pass.

May looked a threat throughout the match as he popped up all over the field and was a constant menace that the Irish defence had to deal with.

“I think he (May) is easily the best finisher and best left winger in England and I would certainly pick him but it’s not my decision,” O'Connor told Premiership Rugby.

“He’s a threat, he’s defensively good he’s committed and he finishes and creates opportunities and that’s what you want.

“That’s what we need and he’s given us so much and I think he’ll be very close to Test selection. The four points is important away from home, that’s four on the bounce which is a first time for a while.”

Meanwhile, London Irish director of rugby Nick Kennedy said he is 'proud' of his side's performance:

“I am proud of the boys, they have massive hearts and they are fighters," Kennedy said.

“They are fighting to the 83rd minute and at the end of games they’ve been very strong which is excellent. We need to stop giving ourselves those mountains to climb.

“We talk about improving things as a team and that was slightly better, it’s disappointing we know we need to get better in the first half and we need to get better in our defence.”
