O’Brien cited, in doubt for third Test

British and Irish Lions flanker Sean O’Brien is in doubt for the decisive third Test against New Zealand next week after being cited for dangerous play during Saturday’s 24-21 victory over the All Blacks.
O’Brien is under the spotlight because of swinging arm to the face of All Blacks winger Waisake Naholo midway through the second half of the match in Wellington.
Naholo had to leave the pitch for a Head Injury Assessment (HIA) which he consequently failed.
“Citing Commissioner Scott Nowland (Australia) has cited O’Brien under law 10.4 (a) for allegedly striking All Blacks winger Waisake Naholo with a swinging arm,” read a New Zealand Rugby statement.
“The Citing Commissioner said the incident, in the 19th minute of the second half, is deemed to have met the threshold for a red card.”
O’Brien has played both Tests for the Lions on this tour and should he miss next Saturday’s all-important match at Eden Park, it would be a massive blow for Warren Gatland’s side.
O’Brien’s hearing wil take place in Wellington on Sunday evening while All Blacks centre Sonny Bill Williams will face a judicial hearing earlier on the same day after he was shown a red card for a shoulder charge on Anthony Watson in the 25th minute of the match.
