The Wallabies have dropped to a record low in the latest World Rugby rankings following their loss to Wales in the Rugby World Cup, which put them on the brink of elimination.

Should Fiji earn five points from their remaining Pool C games against Georgia and Portugal, the two-time world champions will be ousted from the competition.

Australia fell to an embarrassing 40-6 defeat to Wales on Sunday, which was their largest-ever loss in a World Cup.

Pumas and Wallabies swap positions

Jones’ men have therefore slipped from ninth to 10th – their lowest position since the rankings were created – with Argentina moving up.

Los Pumas overcame Samoa 19-10 to give them 1.72 points, while the Wallabies’ reversal in Lyon means that they now stand on 76.50.

There was no change from eighth to fourth, although Wales moved closer to England and Scotland following their big win.

Having started the weekend on 80.66 – level with Fiji – they are now on 83.17, just 0.07 and 0.26 behind the English and Scots respectively.

New Zealand remain in fourth but still a decent distance behind the top three. However, they are closer to South Africa, who dropped to third following their 13-8 loss to Ireland.

There is 2.01 points separating the Boks and the All Blacks, with France up to second and Ireland consolidating first position.

Having overcome the Springboks in Paris in the battle for first place, Andy Farrell’s men are on 93.79, a significant 3.20 ahead of Les Bleus.
