Fijian star Viliame Mata looks on during the Rugby World Cup.

Hard-working Fijian number eight Viliame Mata will trade the colours of Edinburgh for Bristol Bears after he signed a deal to join the Premiership from the 2024-2025 season.

Mata comes off a promising 2023 where he played a key role in Fiji’s charge to the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup in France.

Experienced star

His game is rock solid with his carrying ability the cornerstone of what he offers with his numbers in that regard always impressive. He also offers a huge amount on defence and should never be ruled out on the jackal.

The back-row is vastly experienced having played more than 100 matches for Edinburgh since signing for the Scotland club in 2016.

Bristol’s director of rugby Pat Lam feels the Fijian’s record speaks for itself, particularly after his exploits at the global showpiece in France last year.

“Viliame is one of the most powerful and exciting back-row players in the game, so we’re delighted to be bolstering our forward pack with a player of his world-class calibre next season,” he said.

“While he is destructive and brings gain line on both sides of the ball, he also possesses the passing/offloading skills and experience that will add real value to our team.

“His performances as a centurion for Edinburgh and at the recent Rugby World Cup in France for Fiji, showcased his experience and ability at the top level. We’re pleased to be bringing him to the Bears and the Premiership next season.”

The Fijian will be a welcome signing for the side who sit in eighth place on the Premiership table having only won four games from 10 thus far this season.

Perhaps the addition of Mata could add some additional grunt and nous to Lam’s forward pack as they look to return to the top half of the table on a more regular basis.
