Saracens skipper Owen Farrell showed why he has won so much during his career by setting extremely high standards in their victory over Harlequins.

Mark McCall’s men have struggled at times this season, but they very much found their form at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Sarries were superb from start to finish as they claimed a 52-7 triumph over their London rivals and moved up to second in the table.

Outstanding first quarter

The opening 20 minutes set the tone as a rampant Saracens side touched down three times through Alex Lewington, Theo Dan and Sean Maitland for a 19-0 advantage.

It was the ideal start but Farrell was not impressed when lock Hugh Tizard got a bit too enthusiastic by going for an off-load that wasn’t on.

Farrell, who pretty much demands perfection, was not impressed and could be heard telling the second-row that his decision was “f*****g stupid”.

Tizard evidently heeded the advice as he and his team-mates never deviated from their plan for the rest of the game.

Farrell’s leadership style may annoy some outside observers but there is no doubt that he commands full respect from the teams he plays in, with Planet Rugby’s Alex Spink stating on X, formerly Twitter, that it is why Saracens are “England’s champion club.”

They would end up putting a half-century on Harlequins with Maitland and Dan both touching down for a second time, while Lucio Cinti, Juan Martin Gonzalez and Alex Goode also crossed the whitewash.

Classy scores

Saracens scored a number of excellent tries with Elliot Daly playing with particular freedom following a difficult Six Nations.

His through-the-legs pass for Maitland’s second try displayed his vast skill set while he also played a key role in the wing’s first.

Playing at full-back, Daly deserved earned the man-of-the-match award and provided the assist for Cinti’s score in the final quarter.

There were also good performances from fellow England players Ben Earl and Theo Dan as the defending champions ominously moved up to second in the Premiership, just three points behind leaders Northampton Saints.
