Who should replace Scott Robertson as All Blacks head coach following the bombshell announcement?

That’s the question on everyone’s lips as New Zealand Rugby begins its search for his successor with a demanding 2026 international schedule awaiting the All Blacks.

The men from Aotearoa begin their campaign with the home matches of World Rugby’s newly created Nations Championship with games against France, Italy, and Ireland.

That will be swiftly followed by Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour of South Africa with fixtures scheduled against the four United Rugby Championship teams, the Stormers, Sharks, Bulls and Lions, as well as three Tests against the Springboks in the republic and one on foreign soil.

Back-to-back Bledisloe Cup fixtures against Australia are scheduled to take place in October before another gruelling tour of the northern hemisphere that throws up Tests against Scotland, Wales and England before the final round of the Nations Championship.

Who should replace Scott Robertson?

New Zealand Rugby chairman David Kirk states that the union will be casting a wide net over potential candidates and has not identified a frontrunner of any kind as of yet. He added that they will be keeping an open mind throughout the process.

“No one in mind. Completely open. We’re going to cast the net wide,” he said.

“We’re going to get as many people as we can. We think that coaching the All Blacks is the greatest rugby coaching role in the world. We are very hopeful we’ll see plenty of highly qualified candidates.”

So, staying in line with that, we have drawn up a longlist of 15 candidates ranging from the straightforward to the bold and outrageous.

The list even includes a foreign coach, who has enjoyed success in New Zealand in the form of Ronan O’Gara, as well as two former All Blacks coaches and one of Robertson’s assistants. Current Super Rugby Pacific coaches also feature on our list.
