What a try and what a performance from Duhan van der Merwe has inspired Scotland to a 30-21 victory over England in the Six Nations with a breathtaking hat-trick.

The South African-born speedster has a knack for scoring tries against the Auld Enemy and has now racked up five in his last three against the Red Rose.

Van der Merwe’s third score, arguably his easiest as a pin-point Finn Russell kick, sat up perfectly for him to have an easy run in. He finished his first off well, too, after a brilliant piece of attacking play from Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones.

However, his second was the pick of the lot as Scotland punished an error from George Furbank. Jones quickly pounced on the ball and delivered an outstanding offload to van der Merwe.

The winger had a lot to do from around 60 metres out, and his first job was to speed past Ben Earl before leaving Henry Slade clutching at the air in his wake.

With the final defender closing down on him, van der Merwe was quick enough to finish the stunning score in the corner.

Another truly memorable try from the winger and made even better with this outstanding ‘Ultimate Angle’ that the Scottish Rugby social media team has released.

Game-changing ability

Van der Merwe’s triple means that he is just one try away from Stuart Hogg’s record of 27, which he will look to break in a fortnight’s time in their penultimate Six Nations match against Italy.

“It’s game-changing when he has a half-opportunity, takes it and scores,” said Scotland co-captain Rory Darge. “That (second try while trailing 10-7) is a massive momentum-swinger.

“As a forward, it’s definitely nice when you’re working hard in the rucks and you see Duhan run the length. It’s such a good feeling.”

Van der Merwe was named Player of the Match for his efforts despite a late yellow card for a dangerous tackle. He gained over 80 metres in the fixture, beating six defenders and making two clean breaks.
