The Springboks have tormented England fans in recent years with South Africa twice ending the Red Rose’s involvement in the Rugby World Cup, leading to one supporter expressing his disappointment in song.

Ted Phillips, who runs the ‘Under the Posts’ social media accounts, and hosts the podcast by the same name, has recounted the recent results in a song sung to the tune of James Blunt’s 1973.

South African torment

Phillips relives the World Cup matches between the Springboks and England in 2019 and 2023, with South Africa winning the former in the final and the latter in the semi-final.

The song has quickly gained traction on social media with its quirky lyrics, which include:

“PSDT [Pieter-Steph du Toit], more PTSD. I’d thought we’d won, but then we’d scrum…”

Damian de Allende: ‘People forget what France did to host the World Cup’

“Thought it’s coming home but we just bronze, Curry got swore at but it was just Afrikaans – I’m scared of Eben [Etzebeth].”

“I feel like I’m becoming Fabrizio because here we go again…”

The song also references the 2021 British and Irish Lions series, which the Springboks won 2-1, and Faf de Klerk in his iconic South African flag speedo.

Phillips also adds in the song that he is rewatching South Africa’s 2015 loss to Japan “just to heal my soul”.

The Springboks’ scrum and ‘Bomb Squad’ is also referenced throughout the song, with both playing a pivotal role in South Africa’s success over England in both of their knockout fixtures at the World Cup.

South Africa’s Rugby World Cup wins over England

In 2019, South Africa beat England 32-12 in the World Cup final in Japan, and the two sides would meet again in the semi-finals of the tournament in France.

England were largely written off ahead of the fixture but managed to make it a real arm-wrestle, with South Africa edging past Steve Borthwick’s side 16-15 to book their place in the final against the All Blacks. Again, the Boks would be victorious, defeating New Zealand to clinch their fourth World Cup title and second in succession.

England would go on to win the Bronze final, defeating Argentina 23-26.
