Bulls wing Sibongile Novuka produced a moment of ‘outrageous skill’ to set up a try for Wandisile Simelane in their United Rugby Championship clash against the Lions.

An enticing game between the Bulls and Lions was decided by two penalties via the boot of Sanele Nohamba, with the visitors securing a 29-25 victory.

The Johannesburg side’s win ended a three-game losing streak against their Jukskei rivals, with the entertaining clash providing some scintillating moments.

Sibongile Novuka one touch

One of those moments was when former Lions‘ back Simelane scored his second try against his former employers.

The full-back looked to have mistimed his grubber as the ball bounced into the 22 and was en route to crossing the touchline.

Edwill van der Merwe attempted to shepherd the ball over the sideline, but winger Novuka had another plan.

He managed to wrap his leg around Van der Merwe and kick the ball through before it crossed the chalk and into the path of Simelane to score.

The winger’s efforts were praised on Twitter, with @rugbyap tweeting, ‘This is outrageous skill’.

“That’s some try by Wandi there. Edwill vd Merwe trying to shepherd the ball into touch. Novuka’s boot keeps it in and its a try. Great poaching try by Bulls,” added Supersport writer Brenden Nel.

@GreggMac11 hailed Novuka and the officials who came to the correct decision after reviewing the try.

“That’s an amazing try from the Bulls. Great skills from Novuka. Officials did well as a team to come to the try decision”.

Lions hold out for victory

That try came in the 47th minute as the Bulls attempted to claw their way back into the match.

Tries from Van der Merwe and Nohamba gave the less favoured Lions a 20-3 lead after 25 minutes, with Nohamba adding the conversions and two penalties.

Jake White’s side fightback started with Simelane’s first try in the 28th minute, with Sbu Nkosi crossing before half-time as the visitors led 23-13 at the break.

After Simelane’s second, Johan Grobbelaar put the Bulls ahead when Morne Steyn converted his score, but two Nohamba penalties sealed the Lions’ victory.
