Argentina centre Lucio Cinti denied Australia a breakaway try in their Rugby Championship clash as he showed incredible desire to cut down Carter Gordon.

The replacement Wallabies back, who came on for the injured Len Ikitau early in the match, found himself in the clear with half-an-hour played in Sydney.

Rebels pivot Gordon had collected a loose pass from Los Pumas on his own 22 and promptly set off towards the opposition whitewash, pinning his ears back.

Stunning tackle

However, in a stunning effort, the determination, speed and tackle technique of Cinti helped bring down the Wallaby just six metres short of the try-line.

Gordon tumbled into touch and Argentina would get the resulting line-out before clearing their lines, with the scores remaining at 10-10 until the break.

Earlier, Australia had taken the lead thanks to a well-worked try for Ikitau, with Quade Cooper’s long pass helping to create space in the wider channel.

But the centre’s finish led to him departing the action shortly after, with a brave tackle from Argentina full-back Emiliano Boffelli leaving Ikitau injured.

It wasn’t just Argentina who were denied an almost certain try in the first half though, with Marika Koroibete showing his defensive quality on Rodrigo Isgro.

The big tackle from Koroibete came as Los Pumas were pushing hard to take the lead in the opening stanza, but the sides would go in with 10 points apiece.

Earlier in the day, New Zealand overcame South Africa 35-20 in an impressive performance that leaves them sitting pretty atop the Rugby Championship table.
