Wales star Louis Rees-Zammit scores a solo try for Gloucester during the Challenge Cup clash against Edinburgh.

Commentators usually curse players but on Saturday, John Barclay was eating his words after seemingly spurring Gloucester star Louis Rees-Zammit on.

The Welsh winger is renowned for his rapid pace and ability to score frankly ridiculous tries.

“On you go”

However, as Barclay noted in the commentary, he does need some help.

“There’s no point in giving the ball to Louis Rees-Zammit and saying, ‘On you go, he actually needs to have some go forward and some space to operate’,” the ex-Scotland international said.

Barclay had barely finished his sentence as Gloucester won the lineout and whipped the ball out to the Welshman, who again seemingly created something out of nothing.

The 22-year-old quickly shifted gears as he sped past two Edinburgh defenders, side-stepped the full-back and finished off a stunning solo try.

The commentator was in awe of the young speedster, adding: “You get this guy one-on-one, and he makes it look easy. No one even touches him; it’s an unbelievably good finish.”

Rees-Zammit is usually a winger but was playing at full-back for Gloucester in the Challenge Cup clash, a position he could feature in during the Six Nations with Liam Williams unavailable, while Leigh Halfpenny has retired.

Crucial score for the Cherry and White

His try inspired the Cherry and Whites in Edinburgh, pushing them into an 8-5 lead just before half-time.

While Edinburgh would fight back to lead 20-14 in the latter stages of the game, the visitors came up with a late score through number eight Zach Mercer, which Adam Hastings converted to seal the win.

The victory means that Gloucester have won all three of their Challenge Cup games this season and will now face Castres in the final pool stage match.

The Cherry and Whites have fared well in Europe, but they have struggled in the Premiership, winning just two of their 11 fixtures.
