Sunday saw Japan and Argentina play out one of the most thrilling games of the tournament so far with Los Pumas eventual 39-27 winners on the day, securing their spot in the quarter-finals.

Whilst it was not the result that the Brave Blossoms were looking for there was a magical moment and surely one of the tries of the Rugby World Cup so far courtesy of electric second-row Amato Fakatava.

Brilliant skill

The crossing was in the first half not long after Argentina opened the scoring with a try. In reply, Fakatava received the ball inside his own half near the left-hand touchline. He had some space in front of him which he exploited with his impressive pace before putting a chip in behind the last defender.

The kick was good but it still appeared that the covering defence would manage to secure the ball, but the bounce fooled almost everyone, falling into Fakatava’s bread basket allowing the big man to canter over for a sensational try.

The rest of the game was filled with some sensational rugby as the two nations traded blow for blow for the most part before Mateo Carreras buried the Brave Blossoms with a remarkable try to round out his hat-trick.

There were other bits of fantastic skill in the game including a brilliant backwards chip over the top from Japanese scrum-half Naoto Saito which was well received by the electric crowd who soaked in all the action from the final Pool D match.

Argentina now march on to the quarter-finals having finally found some of the form they showed in 2022 when they toppled England, the Wallabies and the All Blacks. Los Pumas face Wales in the first knockout stage and Michael Cheika’s men will be looking to make the most of their momentum in what is set to be a fantastic clash.
