Comedian Jimmy Rees explains rugby.

Comedian Jimmy Rees has produced a brilliant video describing the absurdities of rugby in a hilarious skit.

Rees is renowned for his viral videos explaining the irrationalities of how things were created, often using the same format of himself drinking while explaining the invention while sipping an alcoholic beverage.

Rugby is the topic of one of his most recent videos.

Creation of rugby

The clip starts off with Jason, also played by Rees, asking the inventor to create a new game. Jimmy responds, saying: “Let’s make a game that turns people’s ears into cauliflowers.”

He adds: “Put 15 players on each team… and half of them will be brick walls [the forwards].

“And you play with a ball, and you advance it forward by passing.

Jason interjects, saying you pass it, and before he finishes, Jimmy interrupts, shouting “backwards”.

He goes on to liken a scrum to ‘a little bridge’ when a player passes the ball forward, and the ‘little guy puts the ball under the bridge’.

“What happens under the bridge?” Jason queries.

“Nothing good ever happens under a bridge,” Rees replies.

Rees goes on to describe a tackled player rolling away as a ‘little game of roly-poly to get out of there’.

As for rucks, he quips that it is something like ‘goat fighting’.

Jason later adds that a try should be called a ‘complete’, arguing: “All the moments leading up to when you score should be called the tries, and when you finally do it and score the points, it should be called complete!”

Rees hits back: “No, Jason, we will call those phases.”

Rees then has a spark of inspiration for a lineout, which he dubs ‘cheerleading practice’.

“All the big fellas from each team line up, and they practice tossing up their teammates like they are doing in cheerleading,” Rees explains with a laugh.

Before diving into the positions using innuendoes and laughing, he says that the ball won’t be round but ‘shaped like an egg.’

The video concludes with Jason saying: “No one is going to be stupid enough to play this.”

Reaction

Rugby fans have reacted well to the lightheaded video on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

“Our game is mad. Absolutely barking mad. But we love it because it is mad!” Rugby Inside Line reacted.

Analyst Will Owen expected it to be cringy and was not disappointed.

His post read: “I started watching this expecting to cringe at it. Ended up cringing with it. What a fundamentally stupid sport, huh.”

Former Wasps player Joe Atkinson added: “Probably why it’s a struggle to grow the game. If you know the *rules* it’s easy(ish). If you don’t, you’ve got no chance.”

Another added that it was “annoyingly accurate throughout” and another agreed writing that they hated “how good of a job this does in actually explaining the rules.”
