Flying Fijians skipper Waisea Nayacalevu produced an outstanding finish to kickstart a comeback in his side’s 17-12 win against Georgia in a tight clash.

The whole first half was laced with frustration for Fiji who were outplayed by their rivals. Georgia started well and gained ground on the scoreboard which forced the Pacific side into making basic errors.

Things did not improve after the break with one of their talisman Semi Radradra being sin-binned almost immediately. However, that did not kill the Fijian spirit as the team strung some phases together before the moment of magic.

Game changing moment

Nayacelvu got the ball near the touchline with still so much to do as Georgia had enough cover defence. Even with a player hanging on his back and others covering, the captain showed incredible determination and awareness to take to the air to avoid going out. The dexterity shown to ground the ball was brilliant. A try for the ages.

The try completely changed the tone and seemed to ignite the free running of the Fijians who continued to pile on the pressure. To Georgia’s credit, the side managed to keep their opponents out for an extended period until another stroke of brilliance.

This time it was Levani Botia, whose influence was not at the breakdown on this occasion. The flank received a loose pass out wide, and once he gathered, he pinned his ears back and made for a gap in the defence. It took several players to slow him down before he threw a sumptuous offload to put Vinaya Habosi in for a crucial score.

The Flying Fijians would go on to win the game under some extreme pressure at the end, putting themselves in prime position to advance to the knockout stages ahead of Australia.

The Pacific team only have one game left in the pool stage as they face Portugal, one they are highly fancied to win.
