WATCH: Benetton’s Rhyno Smith downs Ulster with late penalty OFF the upright
Benetton full-back Rhyno Smith was the hero for his club as he kicked a late penalty that snuck over after hitting the upright to claim a 31-29 win over Ulster.
Ulster dominated the early exchanges and scored through Nick Timoney before the hosts struck back with a try of their own to level the scores.
The Italian side found their rhythm and scored again before the teams traded penalties to go into the break with Benetton leading 17-10.
Fly-half Tomas Albornoz added to his tally soon after the turnaround with a drop goal before Ulster pulled the 10-point deficit back to five points with a try in the 55th minute through Rob Herring.
The team continued to trade blow for blow as the game wore on, with Nacho Brex and Mike Lowry both crossing over for tries.
Ulster looked to have stolen the game back when they forced a penalty try in the 74th minute, with Giovanni Pettinelli being yellow carded for collapsing the maul to give a 29-28 lead.
The magic moment
Ultimately the Irish side would pay the price for their poor discipline as Smith stepped up with less than three minutes to go. It was a decent strike, and the tension could be felt around the ground as the ball sailed, almost in slow-motion, towards the posts only to hit the upright and go over – a crazy end to a memorable win for the Treviso side.
